Pettit® Tuff Coat™ Metal Primer 6950 is a matte-finish fast drying, single-component, water-based, corrosion inhibiting primer that's designed for use on interior and exterior metal applications that is compatible with Pettit Tuff Coat rubberized non-skid coatings. The product chemically etches for a tighter bond on clean, bare steel or aluminum surfaces.
Heavy on the technical side...
Always clean the surface to be coated. Never assume it is clean unless you have cleaned it yourself.
Remove all fuel, grease, oil, wax, and other contaminants. If there is any question that contaminants remain, use a commercial degreaser or laundry detergent and a scrub brush. Make sure the surface is physically sound.
General Advice for Applying to Concrete
• The concrete must be fully cured - at least 28 days
• Ideally, the concrete should be dry
• The surface must be clean of contaminants
• The surface must be porous
Unless you are absolutely sure of the concrete history, and that it is free from contaminants, always apply a test sample and check for proper adhesion before undertaking the overall application.
If the concrete is properly prepared and clean, you are ready to apply the product. If, however, the primer does not adhere, this is usually an indication of contamination by chemicals or silicone-type products. In these instances, the test primer will lift off as a sheet. Silcone contamination is particularly insidious, and must be dealt with before applying Ultra Tuff products.
To resolve this, the nature of the contaminant must be determined, and the appropriate cleaning agent applied.
For long-term fuel or oil exposure, for example, several degreaser treatments may be required. In bars, where the concrete is contaminated with spilled beer, appropriate cleaning and a long drying period will be required to kill the beer yeast remaining in the surface of the concrete.
Concrete Cleaning
Degreasers — These are usually kerosene based and dissolve oils, fats, grease, etc. For applying Tuff-Coat products it is imperative that the cleaning process is very thorough, and that no oil or grease residue remains on the concrete. Do this by treating multiple times with neutralizing water rinses in between treatments.
Caustic Detergents — Rather than dissolve fats and grease, detergents emulsify the fats (make them soluable) and bring them up to the surface of the concrete. This allows them to be rinsed off.
Concrete Surface Finish Type
The type of concrete finish is critical for the application of Tuff-Coat products. Ultra Tuff primer and non-slip must be able to penetrate the concrete for good adhesion. Hand troweled, porous textured, and brush/broom finished concrete is ideal.
Heavily worked, compressed, and metal or power troweled concrete is compacted and is not porous, and adhesion difficulties will result without the correct preparation. Non-porous concrete surfaces must be acid etched, or sand or shot blasted. If acid etching is chosen, use a light acid etch, and be sure to remove all traces of remaining acid with soap and water and a scrub brush.
